The Australian Government pays Medicare rebates for a range of medical services that medical practitioners provide. The Medicare Benefits Schedule determines the rebate amounts that patients receive from the Government, and rebates are paid as a percentage of the Medicare Schedule Fee as follows:

• 100% for GP consultations
• 85% for all other services that are provided by medical practitioners in the community
• 75% for all services provided by medical practitioners for hospital treatment when the patient is admitted to the hospital as a private patient.
